A Story a Day in May
My self-inflicted challenge.
For several months two years ago, Medium gave financial bonuses to writers who had the most reads in a month. I was fortunate to earn the bonus twice in the four months in which Medium awarded the bonuses.
At the time, a number of Medium users started writing articles advising people on how they could earn the bonus. Most articles were clickbait and few talked about focusing on the quality of your writing. The most frequent suggestion was to write as many articles as you can — again, without much mention of quality.
Publishing a Medium Story at least once a day was the most common advice. One guy actually advised people to do as he did in publishing three Stories a day. I tried looked him up today and found he is no longer on Medium. Did he burn out or just fade away?
That idea of publishing every day has been simmering in the back of my mind ever since. I’ve always preferred quality over quantity in most things, especially in creative activities. Still, I have long felt that my writing output could be greater than it is. Maybe I need to be more dedicated or focused.
Years ago, I did the NaNoWriMo challenge and churned out a novel in a month. It was fun and I am glad I did it, but I did humanity a favor and never showed that novel to anyone. Fiction is not my…
