As I mentioned in my previous article nine days ago . . .

I was invited to be a special guest speaker at a philosophy conference — all expenses paid. It was a chance to be back in the US for the first time in awhile and without any family obligations. I flew in early to be able to have a day to absorb the seven-hour time zone difference. It gave me a day to explore the city in which the conference took place.

Nashville

It is a city I never imagined visiting. When one thinks of Nashville, a certain genre of music springs to mind, a genre for which I do not care. I successfully avoided such music while I was there, despite my accommodation being in the Music Row neighborhood. The burger bar I went to the first evening greeted me with Metallica on the speakers.

Aside from Nashville being a mecca for aspiring musicians of a certain genre, it seems to me to be a fairly typical American city. It has nice neighborhoods and run-down neighborhoods. Some businesses are clearly thriving and some…
