Buddhism was an attempt to reform Hinduism. One of its key innovations was to accentuate the denial of the self and of desire. Some Buddhists suggested that the desire to end Saṃsāra was preventing that goal. So they did alter the concept significantly. Individuality does exist, no matter how much your try to deny it and try to avoid responsibility for your own thoughts and actions. Don't be a foolish coward.
