Calvin definitely took some inspiration from Augustine, who never entirely shook off his Manichaean past. I also think the heritage of the Roman Empire is to blame, which more than any other single social force institutionalized dualistic thinking. I agree that Eastern syncretism and holism are much healthier ways of thinking than the Western dualism.
