Ego is not self. I don’t agree with Freud’s mereology of the human self, but he was correct that what can be called the “ego” is just a part of the larger human self. We can consciously choose how much to think and act from our ego or other parts of our self. Denying the self to try to eliminate the ego is like destroying your house to get rid of a fly within it.
