How it always has gone:

Elitist - "The opinions of ignorant people don't matter."

Non-Elitists - "Who do you say are ignorant?"

Elitist - "Jews, Gypsies, Socialists, Gays, Women, Blacks ... ... ..."

Putting up with the opinions of those with whom you disagree is the price of an open society. And that's the reality your article is arguing against, not "you need qualifications to do surgery."
