I am one of the university professors who DeSantis and others want to shut up and shut down. He is wrong, but then so are you. "Western civilization" is not a made-up thing. Not in the sense you are meaning it. It is an objective manifestation of a tradition of subjective value judgments and historical events. Those value judgments are what DeSantis means by "actual history." Yes, as you imply, those judgments are directed at "non-Western" cultures (though your question about "what is Europe" also applies to "what do you mean by' non-Western?'") More importantly to the DeSantis part of the right-wing is that those subjective value judgments are based on race, gender, and class within Western civilization. You touch on the important issue of class--that DeSantis sees education as no more than producing compliant working class zombies (the real "zombie studies.")

DeSantis doesn't want to shut me up because I teach non-Western ideas, he wants to shut me down because I DO teach the actual history of Western civilization--not just its positives but its many overwhelming negatives. Feminism and critical race theory are also products of Western civilization. I am proud to teach them. Right-wingers instead want us to teach a literally whitewashed history, a history of rich white men.
