I can't remember the last time the Democrats were a policy-based party. You are correct that Democrats are afraid of Republicans twisting what they say. That's just cowardice. Of course people are going to twist what you say. That you then say less suggests that you don't really mean what you say. If Republicans lie about you, then be MORE firm in your positions to prove them wrong. If Democrats have any integrity and courage, they will do that.

I've lived in Europe the last nine years. All of that "socialism" is wonderful and we aren't bankrupt here. Americans have no idea.
