I couldn't agree more. I accept that the downside of pass/fail is that it might encourage some students to do the minimum effort, but I suspect that the attitude of "pass is just over the failure" is an artifact of the A-to-F grading hierarchy. If explained that pass/fail is about showing adequate comprehension of the topic not "just skating by" then it would put the focus on learning not a grade.
