I couldn't agree more, but I was taking on enough new ground in this article that I didn't want to reform the term itself. At least using "theory" makes the subject matter instantly identifiable.

Conspiracy suspicion is good. I wonder if conspiracy stories would be a better generic term, and that could be amended by your idea of gradations.
