I did not know that history, thank you. I can totally understand the mums; concern, I grew up in the far north of the U.S. and my high school (ages 15–17) stated at 7:50, so in winter, we traveled and arrived there in the dark. And since the U.S. workday is 8:00 to 17:00, in the northern winter, you are in the dark both to and from work. But none of that prepared me for when I moved to England and about seven hours of usable light a day.

Biologically, we should just adjust our sleep and wake times with the seasons like we used to do. The tyranny of clock time is the issue. If we must have clocks, let’s just have Standard Time or Summer Time and stay there.
