I think you are absolutely on target. Underlying the events I mentioned is the rising level of social diversity, especially in circulating more power to previously oppressed demographics, such as women. That's why the closed-minded baby boomer mentality are reacting to drag the world back to archaic social norms that deprive people of freedom.
