In one sense, Einstein’s theories are simple (definitely so compared to the *ahem* stuff churned out today), but what Einstein suggests is definitely difficult to grasp because it runs counter to common sense — more so then than today. Light is bent by gravity? Time unfolds differently at different speeds? And so on. But you explain very well that Einstein’s work has been sensationalized.
