I've seen the unbearable whiteness of academia as a professor for 20+ years. There's no denying that it is an enclave of supremacy in which with few exceptions if a scientist or scholar didn't come from Britain, Germany, France, or the US, they contributed nothing. As a philosophy professor, I am not allowed to include non-Euro-American philosophers because they "don't fit the accredited curriculum." The change we need is far deeper than adding more People of Color to faculty or listening to students of color. The change has to be made at the fundamental level of society's values. Society doesn't value non-whites and academia reflects that. Yes, academia needs to lead the way on changing that exclusion. That action would require a fundamental change in academia to stop being inward looking and start working to change the world.
