John Locke and then George Berkeley showed conclusively that all we can ever know is our own impressions; we can never know what causes our impressions. On the one hand, that does open up the possibility of a simulation as a cause, but on the other hand, it means that the simulation model is completely meaningless as a thought experiment because ti does not add anything to our knowledge of our experiences.
