Most of what you write is true, which helps explain why stoicism is as I characterized it: a fatalism that we cannot escape our doom, that all we can do is accept the only thing we allegedly control: our acceptance or non-acceptance that everything other than that decision is beyond our control. It could be argued that such a worldview leaves room for individual agency, but it reduces agency to such an empty notion as to be inconsequential and meaningless. Does stoicism encourage people to develop resilience and strength of character? Well, yeah, if one reduces the idea of a virtuous and tranquil life is to surrender all hope of possibilities for a better life. Such is the message of abusers and totalitarians throughout history and cultures: “This is the natural order, accept it.” Not all stoics realize that conenction, but they should.
