My sense of the political landscape is that the Democrats and Republicans are in gridlock because they agree on most things but have to manufacture the appearance of opposition. The need to maintain this fake division is what is restraining politics. If there was an actual difference in political views, then parties can be honest about their positions and have no disincentive to manufacture difference and paralyze legislation.
