No one is a fiercer advocate for individual self-definition than I am. However, we are beings embedded in a world, and each of us makes our personal choices within a cultural milieu. What I try to delineate in this article are those broad millieus that move the discussion of generations away from stereotypes and into questions of to what are individuals responding and how.
