Thank you for giving me the opportunity to sharpen my thinking on this. You raise a good issue in deindustrialization, which I am taking you mean the loss of the manufacturing base in the US. Thatcherism and Reaganomics are also important influences on people int he 1980s.

I use the PC is a symbol for a series of changes in the 1980s, not to cover every major change. Mostly, what it symbolizes is the shift in the US from a society that makes thinks and people who are physically active to a society that shuffles information and are passive consumers. I think that encompasses the trends you astutely pointed out. Not perfectly, certainly, but I am hoping to open up discussion on these issues.
