I distinguish between religion, which is institutionally based, and spirituality, which is individually based. We see this distinction most in the question of salvation. A key debate that began in late antiquity was the means of salvation; in particular, whether one could gain it through one's own efforts or must receive it through rituals administered by an institution and clergy. The discussion preceded Hus and Luther. Plotinus is a key component in that debate, because of his emphasis on the migration of the individual soul and philosophical reason as the means of salvation. Thus, this is a eschatological pathway of one's own efforts outside of religious institutions, whether they be pagan or Christian.
