One sentence that you wrote is key to this issue: “Selfish, egocentric thoughts are illusions about the importance of one’s self.” The mistake people, life the celebrity and the school of Buddhism he was advertising, make is to jump from “the content of the idea I have as false” to “my ideas are illusions.” Similarly, they make illogical jumps from “one should be selfless” to “one should deny the existence of self.” Our ideas can be false (“illusions” if you prefer) and our sense of self can be false, but these do not mean the thoughts and self do not exist. Empty your cup so it can be filled, but the emptiness does not include discarding the cup.
No matter how often I encounter it, I am still mystified that some people are so frightened of and angrily lash out at the mention that they are an individual with the power to change how you see the world and thus, the power to change your self and life.
