Like Husserl (https://medium.com/inserting-philosophy/edmund-husserl-on-our-layers-of-consciousness-883b89ab0210), Bergson was trying to return philosophy to its primary task of exploring reality and our perceptions of it. They were rescuing philosophy from the positivists who, as you so well put it and stripped philosophy of sense.
