The book you describe reminds me of another book: Bowling Alone, in which the author describes the collapse of real-world social connections and community. It was published in 2000 before social media and smartphones. I suspect that those two technological trends benefited from and enhanced ongoing trends in social isolation.

I'm very much an introvert, the scholarly bookworm type. The online world gives me more of a connection and more satisfaction than I ever had before it came along. I recognize that I am unusual in this. For most people, what you say about technology dashing hopes for connection are very real.
