The contradiction that James is claiming is expressible in two parts: If our choices were determined then the forces that determined the choice would not also determine us to regret that choice. Then, if everything was determined, then the thought of regretting past choices or circumstances is absurd and likely impossible. On the second point, James was refuting the idea of Gottfried Leibniz.
