The tell-tale sign is when an article gets less than a quarter of normal views, though sometimes followers tell me an article can't be seen without a direct link. Articles I publish usual fall into two bins--either over 600 views or less than 150 views in the first month. Very few in that middle ground. The latter are the ones shadow banned--seen only by subscribers to e-mail notices and hidden from the rest of Medium.
