True. In my philosophy textbook, I end my chapter on Sartre with this paragraph:

Perhaps Sartre was so pessimistic because he lived through the Great Depression, Nazi occupation of France during World War II (he was imprisoned by the Nazis), and the end of France’s empire. Other French intellectuals of that period were also gloomy about life and the future, but few, if any, as much as Sartre.
