While I Was Away …
When in the course of human events …
Henri Bergson said that time is like a large spool that unrolls before us. I like that analogy. We can’t stop or even affect the spool of time, but we have the free will to respond to events as they occur within time. I emphasize the word “respond” in that sentence.
In all of June, I deliberately and with benevolence aforethought abstained from all research and writing activities. I needed a break and I took it. I spent more than a few days doing absolutely nothing, vacationed in the wonderful city of Vienna, and purposely avoided deep and serious thought was much as possible. My sanity was at least partially restored.
While I was away, the spool of time continued to unwind over June, and deep and serious events occurred in the world. I need not give a recounting. News of these deep and serious events reached me, and partly out of instinct and partly out of habit, I felt the urge to write about these events.
I resisted the urges, but experiencing them brought some thoughts to mind. We exist in a world and have to…
