Yes, tell him to always read everything assigned and then read beyond what is assigned. Never take a professor's word for what is important or what something means. That doesn't mean never believe them, but it means to understand that they have only their perspective and he should always be willing to balance multiple perspectives on philosophy and arrive at his own thoughts.
