Yes, that “attachment” is the cause of suffering is fundamental to Buddhist thinking. “Attachment” is variously defined. The problem is that the more pure (true to the original) forms of Buddhism define “attachment” as being a by-product of experience. That means that the only way to liberate oneself from “attachment” is to cease experience. This is why a fundamental tenant of Buddhism is the need to negate experience, thought, and self. That set of core Buddhist principles are the subject of my articles. The more one realizes that we can reduce suffering without the negation of experience, thoughts, and self, the less appealing is Buddhist thought.
