Yes, the women’s side of the dynamic does need to be discussed. I wrote toward the end of my article:
women are trained by society to want to be sexual objects. From an early age, women are enculturated to dress and act in ways that are appealing to men. Women are supposed to show flesh, not just at beauty pageants and nightclubs, but always.
Feminism has open a space for women’s empowerment, but there are still strong patriarchal headwinds against it, not to mention actual violent repression of women trying to chart a non-patriarchal life for themselves. It is on individual women to make their own choices, but we should be considerate in keeping in mind that society still makes it difficult for women to live a life not centered on service to men’s desires.
