You are absolutely correct, and I will resist the urge to start a rant about how correct what you say is. I will say that on the last class of term last Friday, I was almost moved to tears. A student said in class that her other philosophy professor used complex language and was condescending toward anyone who asked for clarification, but that I made the material understandable, that she appreciated that I tried to explain things in simpler words. Another student then said yes, I was the best professor they’d had because I actually cared about the students. The whole class burst into applause. It was a wonderful affirmation, but tinged with anger because I know how little some professors care.
