You are absolutely correct on these facts. Other philosophers and some psychologists have been talking about these factors that you identify. That unwillingness to deal with complexity is a major factor behind why the earnest meaning seekers accept the con jobs sold to them.
On the reality of secrets, like you say, there are secrets and some being kept with good reason. When I wrote recently about conspiracy theories about UFOs, I mentioned how the fact that the military is secretive by nature has facilitated myths about UFO information.
